Why charging habits and temperature matter

The battery is the heart of your electric car. Being careful about how you charge and how you drive can extend its service life considerably.

Batteries are also sensitive to temperature, which comes down to the chemical processes inside them.

When the battery can no longer “breathe”

On the underside of the battery there are vents that regulate the airflow. When the battery warms up, air flows out; as it cools down, air flows back in. If those vents are clogged with dirt thrown up from the road, the process is blocked and the battery can no longer breathe.

What we do during a battery service

We offer cleaning of these vents as a service. The battery is removed, and while it is out we inspect the brake lines underneath. The mounting rails are cleaned as well and treated with a rubber-based corrosion protection before we refit the battery.

On the Tesla Model S the air conditioning drain line sits awkwardly, so condensation drips onto the battery. Where needed, we fit a flexible extension piece so the water can run off to the side instead.
